William W. Martin
William "Bill" Warren Martin was born September 13, 1928 on the family farm located in Chaffee, ND. He passed away February 28, 2018 at the age of 89 in Forney, TX. Bill attended a one room school house in Walburg Township until 8th grade and graduated from Chaffee High School. He attended two years at the Agricultural College now known as NDSU. He was married to Verona Gulzvig of Kidder, SD on December 29, 1957. They settled on the family farm in Chaffee where Bill farmed and raised livestock until he retired in 1992. They raised five children; Kori Odin (Sheryl) Martin, Broken Arrow, OK; Kris Warren Martin, Chaffee; Kara Jean Martin-Ray (David), Dallas, TX; Kaye Lee Aguirre (Agustin), Forney, TX; and Kyle William Martin, West Fargo. During the course of Bill's life he was active in many community organizations. He served as the Walburg Township treasurer for 25 years and as the Cass County Farmers Union President for 25 plus years. He served two terms on the North Dakota State Farmers Union Board and several terms for the Soil Conservation Services in Cass County. A lifelong Democrat, he ran for the North Dakota State Senate office in 1974. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Embden. In his spare time, he was a DEKALB seed corn dealer where he received many awards for top sales. After retiring from farming, Bill did custom corn drying and worked in a local greenhouse. As long as his hands were in dirt, he was happy. He joined the Soil Conservation Service volunteer program and planted many trees in Cass County. Bill enjoyed picking strawberries in the month of July and making his home-made sausage in the winter for family and friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry and Ada (Hacke); brothers, Calvin, Alan and his twin, Wesley (Verna); his brother-in-law, Leon Johnson; sisters-in-law, Mae (Calvin), Doris (Alan), and Darlene (Philip); his God-daughter and niece, Caroline Martin Szeremeta. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Verona; his siblings, Virginia Johnson, Philip, Roger & wife, Pauline, Rose & husband, Pat Markovic and sister-in-law, Verna Martin; his children and grandchildren, Kali Martin, Oklahoma City, OK; Kavin Martin, Ponca City, OK; Haley Coleman, Ponca City, OK; Martin Miller, Mariah Miller, Mikal Miller and Morgan Miller, Minneapolis, MN; Grant Baril, Austin, TX; Remy Baril and Dain Baril, Forney, TX; and a great-grandson, Brendan Draper, Minneapolis, MN. He was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews, whom he loved greatly. Memorial services will be held, Saturday, April 7 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Embden, ND with dinner to follow. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to a charity of your choice. Bill's remains will be interred at Watson Cemetery, rural Leonard.
