KayAnn Erickson, 70, of Chaska, MN, passed away on Friday, November 9, 2018, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. KayAnn Erickson's funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2018, at 3pm at Chaska Heights Senior Living, 3120 North Chestnut, Chaska, MN, with Pastor Randy Ruckdashel officiating.
She was born to Albin and Kathrine (Refling) Erickson on March 25, 1948, at Fertile, Minnesota, and lived with her parents in a house her father had built in Fertile, and where he owned a service station. When her father died in 1955 at age 39, her mother resumed her teaching career. KayAnn experienced the joys and tribulations of having a "sister" in 1965-66 when Lisa Sarajevo, a foreign exchange student from Finland, spent a year with the Erickson family before returning to Finland.
KayAnn graduated from Fertile High School in 1966, after which KayAnn and her mother moved to Moorhead, MN. There her mother taught at Lincoln Elementary School and KayAnn attended Concordia College, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and a double minor in Library Science and Social Work in 1970. In 1971, she earned a BS degree from Moorhead State University. KayAnn was the librarian at Ortonville High School from 1971 to 1974, and the following year served as a librarian at Central Junior High School in Moorhead. KayAnn was a library tech at Moorhead State University from 1975 to 2005 in the Livingston Lord Library.
KayAnn found pleasure in gardening and was pleased to share her garden with the community. Her yard was on the Soroptimist Garden Tour and selected as the garden of the week by the Rotary Club. She was a Master Gardener and served on the Moorhead Beautification Task Force. She was involved with several volunteer activities at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, serving on the Library Board, Lost and Found Ministries Library, and the Cost and Joy committee.
KayAnn had many hobbies including needlework, gardening and following the Twins baseball games. Reading was among her favorite pastimes. Summers she and her mother would relax at their lake cabin on Union Lake. Kay enjoyed traveling and time spent in Hawaii, Florida, and Puerto Rico in the United States and foreign travel in Spain, Portugal and Mexico. Family life was important to KayAnn and she enjoyed the company of her mother, relatives and friends. Her pets throughout the years, Penny, Crystal, Nutmeg, Tansy, Koby and Kokomo brought her joy.
In October of 2016, KayAnn moved into an apartment in Chaska Heights Senior Living at Chaska, MN. She quickly adjusted and became involved in the various activities offered - such as the book club, library, chapel, lectures and happy hour.
KayAnn was preceded in death by her parents, Albin and Kathrine (Refling) Erickson, her maternal grand parents, Martha (Ofstedal) and Ole Refling, her paternal grandparents, Bertha (Eid) and John W. Erickson, and her cousins, Norm Erickson Jr., Eric Feste, and Steven Knutson.
