Age 85 of Edina, MN, formerly of Fargo, died peacefully surrounded by his family on March 2, 2019.
Preceded in death by parents, Horace and Bernice; former wife Susan; sister, Sarah Willert and her husband, Will; and in-laws Harry and Avanelle Wheeler.
Survived by wife, Audrey; daughter, Julie (Jess Koski); step-daughters, Sara (John) Perry, Aimee (Ben) Rembe and Frosty (Mathew) Lindberg; grandchildren, Andrew Olson, Keyara, Jayden, Brock and Anya Perry, and Marlie Passeri; niece, Susan (Gary) DeGooyer, nephew, John (Lori) Willert, and their families.
Don was educated in the Fargo school system, attending college at NDSU where he enrolled in ROTC. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force at graduation. He delayed entrance to the Air Force to study for one year as a Fulbright Scholar at the Technische Hochschule in Stuttgart, Germany. He enlisted in 1956 and served in intelligence at an air base in France during the Cold War.
Don joined the USDA Agricultural Research Service at NDSU in 1959 as a chemist. He received his PhD from North Dakota State University in 1964 in biochemistry, advancing his career from research chemist to research leader and finally to center director for 10 years until his retirement in 1988.
He was a gifted amateur photographer, and he loved traveling, hiking, reading, music, concerts, theatre, good restaurants and gatherings with family and friends. In addition, he had a passion for teaching computer and digital photography classes, and volunteering for hospice. Don had a great sense of humor which he never lost.
Celebration of Life will be held in Fargo at a later date.
