Betty D. Grier
Betty D. (Herlick) Grier, 95 years old, was born on November 21, 1923 in Moorhead, Minnesota and died peacefully on March 9, 2019 in Eventide on 8th, in Moorhead, Minnesota. Betty is preceded in death by the love of her life and husband of 52 years, Duane M. Grier and infant daughter Elizabeth Grier; her parents: Frank Alouis Herlick and Alma Johnson Herlick; her siblings: James Herlick, Irene (Ormand) Reiersgord, Florence (Homer) Murphy, and Stanley (Darlene) Herlick. Betty is survived by: her two daughters Michele (Orval) Lund of Winona, Minnesota, Deborah Grier of Moorhead, Minnesota; her two grandsons: John Lund ( Niki Wagner) of Hudson, Wisconsin, Matthew (Vanessa) Lund of Mound, Minnesota; her four great-grandchildren: Jennifer and Katherine Lund of Hudson, Wisconsin; Miles and Griffin Lund of Mound, Minnesota; her cousin John Herlick of Fargo, ND. Betty met her high school sweetheart, Duane in 9th grade. Betty Herlick and Sergeant Duane Grier were married on October 9, 1943 in Moorhead, Minnesota. Betty’s main desire was to be a wife, mother, and friend. Visitors frequently stopped by the Grier home and guests were always welcomed. Betty worked for the U.S.O. while Duane was deployed in Europe. Their first daughter was born. After WWII Betty and Duane settled in Moorhead and became active in their community including Minnesota State University-Moorhead, Moorhead Country Club, the Lions Club and Trinity Lutheran Church. Betty was also a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization-P.E.O. Betty was also involved in making arrangements for the orientation of the naming of the Grier Hall building on the MSUM campus, which has been named in honor of three generations of the Grier family, including Duane Grier, who made their careers working for MSUM. Betty was a life-long learner and enjoyed taking classes at MSUM, particularly in Humanities and the German language. She was a strong advocate for her 2nd daughter who had a congenital hearing loss, and helped design her daughter’s education. Betty was an accomplished seamstress and also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, Hardanger embroidery, flower gardening and refinishing antique furniture. Betty especially enjoyed traveling and learning about the world and its geography. She often pored over maps connected with her travels. She and her husband traveled to most of the states in the U.S. Betty’s special trips, in addition to her yearly winter stays in Arizona, included traveling to Scotland, Ireland, Washington D.C., Boston, London and Japan. Betty loved life, her friends and family and will be very much missed. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Betty’s name.
