Helen Louise (Buck) Youngs

Helen Louise (Buck) Youngs, age 92, passed away on May 27, 2020, at Eventide on Eighth Nursing Home in Moorhead, MN.

Helen was born March 25, 1928 in Bismarck, ND to Roy and Mildred Buck, who farmed near Tuttle, ND. She attended school in Tuttle, and graduated from high school in 1946. She attended Jamestown College and graduated in 1948 with a teaching certificate. On July 31, 1948, Helen and Vernon Youngs, also a student at the college, were married in the college chapel. Their marriage began by buying a trailer home and moving it to her in-laws farm near Roseglen, ND, where they helped with the farm work, and in the fall, moved, trailer home included, to their first teaching jobs in Columbus, ND. Helen taught grades three and four, and her husband was the high school science teacher. At the end of the school year, they (plus trailer home) moved back to the farm to work for the summer, and established a routine that would be repeated for seven years. Also in Columbus, she often was pianist for the Methodist Church and for vocal soloists.

Her next five years were spent in Bottineau, ND, where she was active in the church activities, both in music and United Methodist Women (UMW), and caring for her daughter Deborah, born, March 15, 1959. Her husband accepted a position in Fargo, ND in 1960, although they lived in West Fargo. Her church activities continued, plus caring for a second child, son Victor, born July 22, 1963. They resided there until 1970, then moved to Madison, WI, which would be their home until 1979, when her husband was transferred back to Fargo, a final move. Again, she was active in the church, particularly UMW. Additionally, Helen was a strong supporter of the YWCA in Fargo. Helen and Vernon celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary on July 31, 2018.

Unfortunately, Helen suffered a stroke in June, 2018, and spent her remaining years in Elim Nursing Home (Fargo) until a serious fire required her to be transferred to Eventide on Eighth in Moorhead.

Throughout her life, including her time in nursing homes, Helen was blessed with a continuously positive and pleasant attitude. Her thank-you’s were frequent; the sincerity real.

Helen’s family wishes to thank the staff at Elim and Eventide on Eighth for the care and comfort provided to her. All of you made a challenging time more manageable. You have our sincere gratitude.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Mildred Buck, her brother, Gerald Buck, and her son-in-law, Patrick Murphy. Survivors include husband, Vernon Youngs, Fargo, ND; daughter Deborah Murphy, Long Beach, MS; son Victor (Melissa)Youngs, Fargo, ND; five grandchildren; Jessica (John) Ricks and Emily Murphy, Long Beach, MS, David Youngs, Julia Youngs and Geoffrey Youngs, Fargo, ND, and two great-grandchildren, Madison, and Aubrey, Long Beach, MS.
