John H. Malpert Jr.

John Herman Malpert, Jr died peacefully at his home in Dilworth, MN on February 19, 2021. He was born in Britton, SD on January 24, 1936 to John and Emma (Martins) Malpert. He grew up on a farm southwest of Brampton, ND, where he attended the rural County Elementary School and was an active member of 4-H, receiving many awards during his tenure. While in grade school, he was elected the county president of Young Citizens League and represented the county at the state meeting in Bismarck. He graduated from Oakes High School, where he was an honorary captain of the basketball team and attended Boys State. He furthered his education at NDSU, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture and Agricultural Economics. He served in the US Army and North Dakota National Guard and was honorably discharged.

John began his professional career in 1961, working for the Farmers Home Administration in Dickinson. In 1964, he became the FHA Supervisor of Sheridan County in McClusky, ND. During this time, he was an active member of the Lions Club, serving as president for one year, and he was a Charter Member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

John went back to NDSU to obtain a Masters with a major in agriculture economics. He then returned to the Farmers Home Administration, spending two years in Jamestown before moving to Linton in 1974, where he became the Supervisor of Emmons County. He then moved onto Bowbells for the next 12 years, serving as County Supervisor for Burke and Renville counties. On January 10, 1992 he retired after spending just over 30 years in federal service, most of the time with FHA.

After retirement, John went back to school earning his second Master’s Degree, this time from UND, in Education Administration. He then became a Certified Real Estate Appraiser.

John is survived by special friend Mary Schultz of Fessenden; son, Dr. John III (Marci) of Petersburg, MI; daughter Janell (Todd) Ness of Fargo; daughter Janet Steinberger of Jamestown; grandchildren Zackery and Brooke Steinberger, David and Michael Roach; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Rudy, Marvin, Herman and Otto Malpert; and sister Adelaide Swanson.
