Barry Lynn Gillund, 76, rural Enderlin, ND, passed away peacefully due to complications of cancer on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at Sanford Fargo Hospice House. There will be no immediate services at his request. Celebration of life is being planned for late June. Burial of cremains will occur in Fillmore Lutheran Cemetery, Enderlin, ND.
Barry was born July 6, 1946 in Mercy Hospital, Valley City, ND to Maurice & Sylvia (Watterud) Gillund, the youngest of five sons. He was reared on the Gillund farm. Barry started to farm independently after his father died in 1965. He married Diane Gunderson July 8, 1970 in Enderlin. Barry and Diane farmed for 52 years.
Barry attended Raritan Elementary School through grade 6 and then transferred to Enderlin schools. He graduated from Enderlin High School in 1964.
Barry believed in sacrifice, service, and hard work. He served as a Raritan Township Supervisor for 33 years. He loved to tinker and figure things out all over the farm. He was a masterful storyteller-though we can’t vouch for the accuracy of all of them. He derived great pleasure convincing his grandchildren that color wasn’t invented until he was in high school which was why his old photos were in black and white, ice cream sandwiches only existed in North Dakota but not Minnesota, and that Bigfoot exists.
Barry led a full life, and when asked how he would like to be remembered, he considered and replied, “he tried.”
He is survived by his wife, Diane of rural Enderlin and three children: Jessie (Micah) Nelson of Woodbury, MN, Chris (Benjamas) Gillund of Mandan, ND & Kellie (Eric) Gillund-Volk of Enderlin, ND and five grandchildren. One brother survives: Rod (Sharon) Gillund of Crosby, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Robert, Roderick and James as well as his in-laws Elmer and Alice Gunderson.
