Richard “Dick” E. Hirschkorn

Richard ‘Dick’ E. Hirschkorn, 82, Fessenden, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford. Richard E. Hirschkorn, son of Dick and Emma (Oster) Hirschkorn, was born August 8, 1936 on the family farm near Manfred. He received his early education in nearby country schools and later attended Harvey High School, graduating in 1954. On November 25, 1958, Dick was united in marriage to his beloved Betty Knodel at Fessenden. In 1960, he entered the U.S. Army, and they were stationed in San Pedro, CA until being transferred to Turkey. Following his honorable discharge in 1962, Dick and Betty made their home in Fessenden, and he began working on road construction. In 1969, he accepted a position with Farmers Union Oil Company, where he continued to work and serve the community for 34 years until his retirement. Dick was a member and past trustee of First Lutheran Church in Fessenden. He was active in the Fessenden community, serving as city councilman for 12 years. He was also a past member of the Fessenden Ambulance and Rescue Squad. Dick had a passion for cars and auto racing, the centerpiece being dirt track stock car racing. Summer weekends were most often spent at tracks in Minot, Jamestown, and Mandan, with annual trips to Wisconsin. He also greatly enjoyed creatively building and repairing just about anything by hand, watching a “good old Western,” and most of all people. His kindness, warmth, and sense of humor endeared him to many. Dick wore many hats (figuratively and literally) and had many titles, but he was most proud to be a beloved Husband, Dad, and Gramps. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty; his children, Todd (Lisa) Hirschkorn of Harrisburg, SD and Carol Hirschkorn of Carrollton, TX; 4 grandchildren, Sydney, Justin, Ryan and Claire; brother, Curtis (Pam) Hirschkorn of Grand Island, NE; and sister-in-law, Dyana Hirschkorn. Dick was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, DeWayne ‘Fritz’ Hirschkorn.
