It is routine to get reactions to columns critical of the on-his-way-out failure of a president. However, reactions to the last two commentaries (Dec. 19 and Jan. 9 in print; online at inforum.com) were uncommon both for their number and their agreement. After the assault on democracy in the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, readers who tended to give Donald Trump a pass have had enough. Good for them. A sample of their comments.

John from Fargo wrote: “Bravo. I hope your words … will reverberate among sensible Republicans. I do hope your column and (Forum editorial of Jan. 9) will convince people of all political stripes that what used to be honest Republicanism is diametrically opposed to Trumpism. Thanks again, Jack.”

Dale of West Fargo said: “Your article ‘Liar-in-chief is loser-in-chief” (Dec. 19) was one of the best I’ve read in a long time. I’m sending it to my Democrat friends plus a couple to Trump supporters I know that will not agree … Just wanted to thank you and let you know how much I appreciated reading it.”

Larry from Fargo: “I have read dozens of descriptions for (the Jan. 6) events, state, national and worldwide. Not one did a better job than you did in your Jan. 9 commentary in The Forum. Moreover, you bring it all home. Thank you.”

Bob and Linda wrote: Jack, everything in your column(s) is right on. My wife and I are both 72. We came of age in the ‘60s. Lots of turmoil. But the riots in Washington, D.C., are far worse. Trump incited the riots! His buddy, Rudy Giuliani incited the riots. Trump enablers caused the riots. Our ND congressional members are nothing but Trump bootlickers ... The 3 of them are a disgrace. The sad thing is that North Dakota voters re-elect them. They won’t get any votes in our house, nor from our daughters’ families. We have a 19-year-old grandson who will not vote for them …”

Bob of rural Minnesota said: “Thank you for (your) column. I place little blame on Trump. He is grossly under qualified to be president … He has obvious personality disorders and is probably mentally ill. The blame goes to his lap dogs who put him there and allowed him to stay. Cult members will continue to vote in the lap dogs. But we can work to remove the president who committed sedition and probably treason. For the sake of history and the rule of law Democrats must work to remove him now …”

From Michael of Moorhead: “Thank you for continuing to speak against the toxic Trump cult and his followers.”

Faye of Minneapolis wrote: “Your article ... was great. My siblings live in (the Red River Valley) and they are all GOP. Needless to say, the cling to the ‘fact’ that the evil in the world is caused by Democrats. Uffda! … The orange-faced man has been a disgrace and danger before he took office. I am proud of you for writing what you did.”

Charles of Carrington, N.D., said: “Thank you for your opinion column … You were rough on the Trumpsters, but they have earned it … This election denial is a threat to our democracy. Then there are the crazies who talk about violence and are encouraged by Trump. Keep it up.”

Harold saw it differently: “You should be ashamed of your lack of respect toward the office of the president of the United States…”

To which I say: You have it wrong. I have no respect for the president, and great respect for the office he has stained.

Finally, Lew of North Dakota: “Hey Jacka**. How can you be such a moron? My god has more brains in her farts than you will ever have … You dam Democrats bread this hatred with all your lies and accusations against President Trump … dumb a** Nancy Pelosi and brainless Schiff, how about those two liars? So before you go about condemning, look in the God D@&! mirror and you will see who is to blame for this shame. YOU, Jacka**.”

I say: Always enlightening to receive a thoughtful and civil message. Ahem …
