Imagine this: You attend church services on Sunday and your pastor or priest gets up in front of the congregation and says "We are making some changes in order to keep church and state separate. From now on, no one in this church shall pray for the president, military, members of Congress, the city mayor, or the school system. If any of you wish to celebrate George Washington's birthday you may do so outside this church, but you must not mention the name 'George Washington' within the walls of this church ..!!!"
Absurd, isn't it ...? And it would never happen. Yet this is what some folks are asking me to do concerning my savior, Jesus Christ, when I'm celebrating his birthday and "out in public." I am a Christian, and proud of it. I have fond memories of being in the Christmas play in school as a kid. I remember singing songs about the Christ child in the school choir. Yet now I'm expected to just accept my loss of freedom in these matters.
By the way ... an early Merry CHRISTmas to all of you in 2006.
