'Trust - without it you have nothing because trust is everything." These are some of the very first words West Fargo High teacher Paul Tefft spoke to my government class on the first day of my senior year. Throughout high school I have acquired a great amount of knowledge, but in that one sentence I obtained something more valuable than the steps to writing a paragraph or working out an equation. I learned a life lesson.
In this day and age, people are almost always concerned with themselves.
Everything is looked at in this perspective: "If it benefits me, then it is worth my time." It's really sad that people have forgotten how to take time out of their days to help others. It is wrong that people will go out of their way to make sure their life is at its greatest, even if it means tearing others down in the process. It is disappointing that all trust has been "thrown away."
My mom has told me time and time again, "Once you lose my trust, it will be hard to gain back." I know this statement is true because I have done things I regret and in the process of doing so, the bond of trust I share with my mom has slightly been diminished. Now that I'm getting older, I have taken into consideration the actions I generate. I try to prevent defying the "laws of mom" in hopes of keeping the precious bond that still remains.
Tefft made me realize the importance of trust. Because he preached the importance of trust for that entire hour on the first day of school, I am indebted to him. If I ever learn a life lesson before the man who's taught nearly three generations, I will be sure to share the knowledge he, most likely, helped me attain.
