Running equals tourism: not exactly a mathematical equation but true nonetheless. On May 14, Fargo-Moorhead residents saw firsthand what it's like to have thousands of people going through the community. And those thousands of people saw firsthand how great FM hospitality can be.

The first annual Scheels Fargo Marathon was, by any measure, an incredible success for our community as well as for the participants, and the Fargo-Moorhead Convention & Visitors Bureau is proud to be one of the charter sponsors.

Thanks to Scheels for being the name sponsor; to Mark Knutson and his committee for an impeccably-run run, and to the many sponsors and city government organizations that lent their assistance.

One of the first ways that a destination reaches out far beyond its borders is through tourism. Many people who choose to move to a particular location have been there first as a visitor and liked what they experienced. That means that Fargo-Moorhead just acquired a few thousand more boosters since the runners raved about our community, about the organization of the event, and the route, but most specifically about the warmth and enthusiasm of the people of Fargo-Moorhead.

We estimate that this first-year event was worth about $500,000 to our community. That figure could double or quadruple in just a few years. What a great event. Now, a couple of thousand visitors know that what we've said for years is true: Fargo-Moorhead is "More Than You Expect!"
