The federal candidates like Senator Heidi Heitkamp and Republican challenger Tom Campbell released their fundraising totals for 2017 a while ago, and of course those totals generated headlines. Mostly about how much money Heitkamp has raised.
But the actual disclosure reports behind those numbers just recently became available from the FEC, and they tell an interesting story. Especially when it comes to the geography of the contributions.
For instance, according to Senator Heitkamp’s disclosures, she raised more than 94 percent of her itemized individual campaign dollars from out of state in 2017. New York was the top source for Heitkamp’s fundraising followed by Texas, Washington D.C., California, and Massachussets.
North Dakota – you know, the state that actually elects her to the Senate – came in 6th. In fact, New Yorkers gave more than 2.7 times more campaign cash to Heitkamp than North Dakotans did.
