Nelson: The witch hunt continues

Ross Nelson.jpg

Atheists, take heart. You may take the lack of lightning striking down congressional Democrats who are saying that there's a constitutional crisis brewing between Congress and President Trump as proof of no God. When did these Democrats and their media allies ever send roses to constitutionalists? When asked what constitutional authority Congress had to pass Obamacare, Nancy Pelosi incredulously replied “Are you serious?” But suddenly the Constitution is a north star to Democrats.

There are approximately 29 ongoing investigations of the Trump administration at various government levels. This, after two years of Special Prosecutor Mueller's team of 40 FBI agents, 19 lawyers, and at least $25 million spent on a report that concludes there was no collusion between Trump and Russia. The rational person might think that so extensive a search would put an end to the matter, but that's the problem with rationality: it's a cotton candy barrier to the fury of disappointed leftists. The report's unhappy result is not what liberals wanted, so the witch hunt continues.

A letter writer to the Forum approvingly quotes Mueller's nub of the report: “A statement that an investigation did not establish particular facts does not mean there was no evidence of those facts.” Translated into three plain English words: “I got nuthin.'” So in order to find something, anything, no reasonable suspicion is required to delve into every aspect of Trump's, or his children's lives. How many of us could survive that kind of examination unscathed?
Suppose that you, esteemed reader, decided to run for office. Your political enemies want to stop you. How best to do that without any proof of illegality on your part? Go on fishing expeditions. Opponents can try to make you show your tax information and business dealings for an indefinite period; when one expedition fails have two or three more ready to go, not because your enemies have the slightest probable cause of wrongdoing but merely to keep the pot boiling and your name tainted in the media. Maybe they can turn the election against you just by dint of their smoke and vapors. Since Trump polls slightly better right now than President Obama did at the same point in his presidency, the Democrats' plan is transparent.

You can't read Gene Healy's “The Cult of the Presidency” without dismay at how overgrown the presidency has become. Nonetheless, the Democrats' urge to finish the putsch the FBI started is the real constitutional crisis here. Trump is justified in resisting the current illicit and illegal Democrats' demands. Unlike President Nixon and Watergate, in which there was a verifiable crime committed as the foundation to impeachment, what the Democrats are doing now is just sheer malice.

There's one good thing to come out of all of this liberal vitriol and harassment of Trump: some alleged conservatives such as the Holy Trinity (Limbaugh, Hannity and Levin) have finally begun to understand that we should distrust and monitor law enforcement authority at all times, contrary to their previous licking the boots of everyone connected to the justice system. It's about time.
