Whalen: Grifters gonna grift
Whalen writes, "It’s way past time for the Republicans to break with Trump and tell the truth about the election. Their silence has resulted in violence, death, vandalism of the Capitol, prison time for their constituents, and their constituents being defrauded by Trump."
I lived most of my life in the Twin Cities metro area and have now realized that I was lucky to have senators and representatives in Washington who actually valued and respected the opinions of their constituents. Every time I contacted them, I received a well-thought-out reply. It was usually an email. I had one congressman’s staff call me about my concerns.
I moved to Fargo a little over four years ago. My experience with those who represent North Dakota is completely different.
In the four years that I have lived in Fargo, neither Sens. Hoeven and Cramer nor Rep. Armstrong have had a listening session here to hear what is important to their constituents. They post a lot of pictures of executives they meet so we can think they are important.
I have contacted all three multiple times on many different issues. Armstrong’s webpage specifically asks if one wants a reply. I have never once received a reply from his office. When I called his office to voice concerns about the insurrection, I was hung up on.
Hoeven’s office has sent only an occasional reply. Cramer’s office has sent a few more replies but not always on the issue that I contacted his office about. Just a generic email on any issue.
I recently contacted all three about concerns about what the investigation into the insurrection. Cramer’s office was the only one to reply and he just deflected to BLM and the riots in Minneapolis.
Some may dismiss my opinion because I am a Democrat, so it doesn’t matter. After all, the three of them are Republicans. That’s not how it works. Once someone is elected, they represent all their constituents. Those testifying before the Select Committee are former members of Trump’s inner circle, so hardly "never-Trumpers."
They have revealed that Trump knew he lost. They revealed that Trump watched the violence on January 6, 2021, with glee. Many in the mob Trump incited to violence have been convicted of felonies. The Select Committee revealed that Trump raised a quarter of a billion dollars by claiming fraud and to fight it. Instead he committed fraud and pocketed the money he raised. He never set up a fund to fight election fraud. The grifter was just running another grift. Grifters gonna grift.
Reps. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., and Adam Kinzenger, R-Ill., are the only Republicans in Washington with the courage to do what is moral and right. The rest of them have no courage and no integrity. They’ve allowed their constituents to commit crimes for their orange messiah because they don’t have the courage to uphold their oath to the Constitution. They’ve allowed their constituents to be conned out of money because they didn’t have the courage to uphold their oath to the Constitution.
Trump’s former attorney general, Bill Barr, stated Trump was “detached from reality” if he believed the fraud he was alleging. It’s way past time for the Republicans to break with Trump and tell the truth about the election. Their silence has resulted in violence, death, vandalism of the Capitol, prison time for their constituents, and their constituents being defrauded by Trump.
It becomes impossible to dismiss my assertion that they don’t really want to represent their constituents when we all see the consequences the Trump mob has faced. Most in the Republican Party just want to keep their lips glued to Trump’s ginormous posterior. Meanwhile, their constituents are receiving prison time and are being conned yet again. Find your courage, gentlemen.
Whalen is an insurance professional who lives in Fargo with her beloved dog Baxter.
