Whalen: Republicans need to tell Trump it's over
Whalen writes, "FBI agents are getting death threats. The judge who signed the search warrant for Mar-A-Lago is getting death threats. There are calls for violence on far right websites. The GOP needs to find the courage to stand up to Trump before people are killed."
We saw a part of who Donald Trump is when he announced he was running for president. He is a bigot. We saw who he is when he mocked a reporter’s disability. We saw who he is when he insulted Gold Star families. We saw who he is when he attacked POWs. We saw who he is when the Access Hollywood tape was released.
We heard about who he is when former White House staffers testified before the Select Committee. He incited an insurrection and watched it unfold with glee. He said former Vice President Mike Pence deserves to be hung.
Gen. Mark Milley gave us more insight into Trump’s character—or lack of character—when his draft resignation letter was released. Milley wrote, “It is my deeply held belief that you’re ruining the international order, and causing significant damage to our country overseas by kowtowing to the kinds of 'fascism' and 'extremism' that America fought against in World War II.
FBI agents are getting death threats. The judge who signed the search warrant for Mar-A-Lago is getting death threats. There are calls for violence on far right websites. The GOP needs to find the courage to stand up to Trump before people are killed.
In August 1974 Sen. Barry Goldwater, R-Ariz., led a group of his fellow Republicans who stood up to then President Richard Nixon. They told him that he faced all-but-certain impeachment. Nixon announced his resignation the next day.
We need a Goldwater to stand up to Trump and tell him he’s done, the party is no longer supports him. We have seen that North Dakota Sens. Kevin Cramer and John Hoeven and Rep. Kelly Armstrong lack the courage to do what’s right. I have a suggestion gentlemen. Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., has the courage to do what’s right. Let her take on Trump and stand behind. You may even be able to hide behind her skirt.
Whalen is an insurance professional who lives in Fargo with her beloved dog Baxter.
