Saturday's (Jan. 20) Forum article was disturbing to me, an NRA member who voted for Mayor Dennis Walaker.
His statement that he was an NRA member for one or two years but dropped it because of the NRA's stand on "automatic weapons" is ridiculous. If he were ever really an NRA member, he would certainly know that mainstream media and politicians regularly label semi-automatic firearms as "automatic weapons" and "assault weapons" to sensationalize and gain support for their anti-gun agenda. How could he know the "NRA's position on automatic weapons" if he has not been a member for nearly 20 years, as he states?
Its position has always been in support of responsible ownership and punishment for illegal sale, possession or use of any firearm. Automatic weapons have been unavailable for legal purchase anywhere in the United States for more than 50 years without a federal permit. Since 1968, anyone legally selling firearms in businesses or at gun shows has been required to maintain a federal firearms license and undergo a thorough background check.
Mayor Walaker shows his true position on our Second Amendment rights by attending the National Summit of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Their goal is quite simple. Eliminate ALL guns from us, the law-abiding public, under the guise of limiting "illegal gun trafficking." Attending the summit proves he wears the same political camouflage as many other national anti-gun ownership chameleons, and his attempt to discredit the NRA is shameful.
You've lost my vote, Mayor Walaker.
