Once again, the Fargo Board of Education has received a clean audit of financial practices. In the fall of 2000, there were concerns about taxes being too high, patrons who wanted to keep all of the current services and accounting practices were being questioned in the media. Some suggested the state auditor's office should be asked to perform the annual audit of the financial records.

When the auditor's three-year contract expired, a bid for auditing services was let. The successful bidder was, in fact, the North Dakota State Auditing Services.

In their first year of auditing the district, no irregularities of accounting practices were found in the nearly $80 million budget. The auditors made three suggestions toward improvement in a traditional management letter. At the Nov. 12 Board meeting, the State Auditing Services completed its second and most recent audit.

Again, no irregularities of accounting practices were found in the $80 million budget. The suggestions of the previous management letter had been implemented. No additional suggestions were made in this audit.

For the first two of the three years of this process, I chaired the board. This year, the audit report was again perfectly clean and, in addition, property taxes were reduced by four mills. This is certainly good news. I am confident that I and other members of the board will continue to be excellent stewards of our district's resources.

We, and those hired to serve the district, have earned the continued trust of the community. I look forward to a renewed focus on what students should know and be able to do.
