Is it so difficult for our representatives to give us a clear stance on gay marriage? Sens. Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad, D-N.D., believe marriage should be between a man and a woman, but oppose a constitutional amendment banning gays to wed. Congressman Earl Pomeroy, D-N.D., feels the same way.
Duane Sand recently held a press conference where he not only stated that he believes marriage is a union between a man and a woman, but actually followed through on his words. He personally gathered signatures to help in the effort to place this issue on November's ballot for North Dakotans to decide.
Pomeroy agrees with Sand that marriage should be between a man and woman. However, he does not support a constitutional amendment to be voted on by North Dakotans that would keep it this way. Similarly, he supports the war in Iraq, yet votes against giving additional funding for our troops to get the job done.
North Dakota does not need a man of words in Congress, but rather a man of action. If you believe in something, have the nerve to back it up and see it through.
Earl Pomeroy is trying to please the majority of North Dakotans by saying he is against gay marriage, while appeasing his liberal base by opposing an amendment that would prohibit it in North Dakota. The same line of thinking holds true with his stance on Iraq. This kind of flip-flopping would make John Kerry very proud.
