In response to Kenneth Emmel's letter of July 8: Emmel has apparently forgotten that the terrorists who invaded our country Sept. 11 - who continue to infiltrate our land whenever they are able - were and are not from Israel but from Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and other Middle Eastern nations. Israel has never left its land to conquer other lands. It has never ruthlessly murdered innocent women and children. It has never converted by the sword. It has never slaughtered, by the thousands, its own people. These things can be said only of true "terrorists."

The United States has been an ally of Israel, but our support of them has been far from "unconditional." You will probably not find it in the history books, but how many Jews fled Europe during World War II by boat, came to the shores of the United States and were turned away, only to either die on the water or be sent back to Europe to be slaughtered by Hitler's regime? More than most people would care to remember or even think about.

How much land has the United States "encouraged" Israel to give away so peace might come to the Middle East? Land that was given to them by God. Land that was purchased by Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and by the Jewish people time and time again. Land that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and their wives are buried on.

How much "peace" has come at such great a cost? Is it Israel that continues to threaten other countries in the Middle East, the United States and all over the world? There will never be enough land to bring the peace many are calling for. These so-called advocates for peace will not be content until every last Jew is cast into the sea.

Yes, I do believe George Washington would be shocked and saddened if he could see what has happened in this country. But it would not be because we have fought to overcome oppression in other parts of the world, and it would not be because we have supported Israel. It would be because America has turned her back on God.

Washington himself said, "Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle ... Let us raise a standard to which the wise and honest can repair: the rest is in the hands of God."

Thomas Jefferson hit the nail on the head when he said, "Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep forever."
