Dr. T.S. Adams letter: Statements reveal total ignorance

Statements such as "Evolution not scientific fact; it is merely another theory" (Forum Dec. 29) expose a total ignorance about science and the scientific method.

Statements such as "Evolution not scientific fact; it is merely another theory" (Forum Dec. 29) expose a total ignorance about science and the scientific method.

What is a scientific theory? How is a theory formulated? Any scientific theory is based on a collection of facts derived from experimental data and observation. The theory provides a structural framework to explain the facts. As new facts are obtained, a theory is fine-tuned to incorporate this information. Thus, science is a self-correcting discipline and is not static.

Evolutionary theory is supported by data published in thousands of papers. Even disciplines that did not exist in Charles Darwin's time, such as genetics and molecular biology, support evolution.
