I am new to Fargo this year, but have lived in many snowy places in the past (Alaska, Idaho, Utah and Michigan). One major attraction of Fargo is the excellent winter trail system by the river. I have to compliment the city and the dedicated trail maintenance crew on the intelligent design and diligent upkeep of these trails despite record snowfall.

What I particularly appreciate is the creation of three trails to serve different users: the plowed bike path for walkers and winter cyclists, the smoothly packed trail for skate skiers and snowshoers, and finally, on the trail closest to the river, the set tracks for classical cross-country skiers.

Although I enjoy all these winter activities, what I have been doing lately is teaching my two young sons to cross-country ski in the set tracks. It is wonderful that we do not have to contend with walkers, skaters and snowshoers crushing the set tracks, which can cause the skis to jump out of the track and the skier to lose balance.

Having set tracks has cut down on my kids' frustration and helped them learn more quickly. Enjoying an outdoor sport that gets the heart pumping is an important part of enjoying winter and establishing lifelong habits of good health.

Thank you, Fargo, for the excellent trails that make this possible.
