LEAFY SPURGE: To the sincere folks who labor on the task force that will recommend a new logo and nickname for the University of North Dakota. They are unnecessarily extending the process by trying to be oh-so-inclusive and “fair” to everyone and anyone. The task force will have a committee to check the work of the committee, and yet another review to check or re-check or revise or re-examine or reject the work of the main task force or the other committee or UND’s administration or student government or – well, you get the idea. Enough already. Fact is that no matter what the ultimate outcome, some people won’t like it. The process, however extended, will not satisfy everyone. So, the logo group should get on with it. Make a selection. That’s the job the panel was charged with. Do it.

PRAIRIE ROSES: To legislators in North Dakota and Minnesota who are gathering in their state capitols this week for sessions of their respective legislatures. The two states operate their sessions differently, the most notable being that Minnesota meets every year, while North Dakota’s session is every other year. Nonetheless, lawmakers put in long hours and deal with life-changing issues in both states. They frequently are criticized, reviled and otherwise abused, but most are motivated by the right instinct: make life better for the people of their states. So, while it’s easy to work up a frothy anger about the men and women in St. Paul and Bismarck, their work is important, and with a few exceptions, they do it well.
