If the weather forecasters are right, today looks to be a typical mid-June day: warm, sunny, slight chance of showers. Weather, at least, will not be an excuse to not vote in the North Dakota election/primary. The ballot is long and stuffed with issues that have generated passionate debate. Voter interest appears to be high, and it would not be a surprise if a record for a North Dakota primary were set.
In addition to state ballot measures on taxes, religion and collegiate imagery, local voters will chose city commissioners, school board members and park commissioners. In Fargo, voters are being asked to extend a flood/infrastructure sales tax to fund ongoing flood protection work. County voters will cull county commissioner hopefuls to two in each contested district for the November ballot. A few area cities, including Horace, have contests for mayor and city council.
Early voting concluded Friday, and as in 2010, it was a great success. Cass County election officials have done an excellent job of not only advertising early voting, but also in locating balloting sites where most voters can conveniently vote.
Today it's up to the voters. Take advantage of the good weather. Review the issues. Know the candidates. Be informed. And then participate in one of the most important privileges of citizenship.
