Tragedies such as the one at a Wal-Mart Store in Nassau, N.Y., where an employee was trampled to death by a frenzied crowd wanting to snatch up bargains, show us - and the world - who we truly are. In other parts of the world, people get trampled to death at religious festivals and pilgrimages. In our country, materialism reigns supreme, and that is what people die for.
The economic crisis this country is currently in should be a wake-up call to us all, to re-examine our priorities and ask ourselves what we are doing today that will matter in 100 years.
