Gary Larson, Fargo, letter: Drilling in ANWR is not best option

Again there are calls for drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. And there is still no reason for drilling. Oil is a global commodity, and the short-term supply of oil in ANWR would only slightly affect the supply and price of oil.

Supporters of drilling speak of the small footprint of modern drilling that would affect the refuge. We only need look at the dire state of the sage grouse due to the impact of energy development in our western states. There would be a huge energy development footprint in the Alaskan refuge.

A far better solution for our grandchildren and wildlife is conservation and research into alternative energy sources. More efficient vehicles, alternative transportation, and reduced speed limits should be immediate priorities.
