The Republican Party is taking a very curious stance by trying to ban gay marriage - especially in proposing a constitutional amendment to ban it. With this stance, they are taking the view that tyranny of the majority is acceptable and that discrimination is OK - as long as it is done by the majority.

One of the founding principles of this country is that tyranny is never to be condoned or tolerated. One cannot simply vote another group's rights away simply because they are in the minority. Moreover, the U.S. Constitution protects the rights of all people - not just the majority. In this sense, a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage would in fact be unconstitutional - making the whole idea absurd.

Sens. Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan should be congratulated for killing the constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. The whole idea was disrespectful to our constitution and our founding fathers and should never have been brought to the U.S. Senate.

Moreover, it amazes me that the Republican Party would take such un-American ideas as being for discrimination, for tyranny, and against the Constitution - especially during an election year.

The fact that it appeals to half the nation frightens me.
