In The Forum dated Sept. 27, an article is headlined "Bush asks nation to drive less, conserve more." An excerpt from that article states "Meanwhile, he encouraged motorists to conserve energy and said he has directed federal agencies to do the same."
The very next day in The Forum, there is a picture of a Minnesota Department of Transportation worker preparing "to erect a new 60-mph sign on Highway 100 in Robbinsdale. The speed limit has been increased on 930 miles of Minnesota roads ..."
I don't believe this is the time to increase speed limits on any of our highways. Instead, it seems appropriate to me that we lower the speed limits on our interstate system in order to conserve a precious natural resource by getting more miles to the gallon. In doing so, we just might end up with some extra dollars we could send to the American Red Cross or Salvation Army to help in the relief efforts of our neighbors to the south.
