January thaw sure to be brief, so enjoy it now

It doesn't happen every winter, but it is this year. We're in the midst of a modest and apparently short-lived January thaw. It's welcome respite from the sub-zero temperatures and wind chills of late December.

It doesn't happen every winter, but it is this year. We're in the midst of a modest and apparently short-lived January thaw. It's welcome respite from the sub-zero temperatures and wind chills of late December.

In western North Dakota, the "thaw" is flirting with record-breaking high temperatures. The mercury was expected to rise to 50 degrees this weekend. The weather won't be near as warm in the Red River Valley (never is), but even above-freezing highs will be viewed as shirtsleeve weather by the hardier denizens of the eastern part of North Dakota.

It won't last. Never does. So enjoy the mid-winter break. Get on the cross-country skis. Take the kids to the sledding hills. Scrape the ice off drives and walkways. Take a walk in the relative warmth of January on the Northern Plains. And keep in mind: Spring is not that far off ...
