In choosing a presidential candidate, both parties might heed the biblical imperative, "What does it profit you if you gain the whole world and lose your soul?"
Many on the religious right seem ready to accept any Republican who can win, regardless of his stand on issues important to them. Similarly, most of my fellow Democrats want a winner first and foremost even if that person is a "centrist" who will betray our liberal principles regarding the ill-begotten war, trade, tax fairness and other essential issues in order to cater to big-money donors.
