The question I didn't hear asked at the president's press conference was: "If you can plant wiretaps without judicial oversight, what is to prevent you, or some future president, from using this weapon against political opponents?"
Before you say it could never happen, just remember Watergate, the bugging of Democratic headquarters by the Nixon administration.
It would be very easy for this administration to rationalize putting a watch on Howard Dean as a danger to American security; they are already watching senior citizens and Quakers who dare oppose the Iraq war.
Where will it end if we don't restore the checks and balances of our three co-equal branches of government?
