The good news: Norm Coleman, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, came to northwest Minnesota with a creative, encouraging and believable commitment to work for those of us who live closer to Canada than the Twin Cities. The even better news is that he has a proven record of achievement, success and getting good things done as the mayor in St. Paul.

The bad news: We have been ignored to the point it often seemed like the current senator, Paul Wellstone, forgot us. The even worse news is that for nearly 12 years Wellstone has often appeared to be more interested in advocating and advancing the agendas set forth by the Washington liberal establishment than in responding to his constituents in the northwest corner of Minnesota.

Another six years of Wellstone is not going to help us. At least Coleman, and I take him at his word that he will be back to northwest Minnesota after he is elected as our senator, has already proven he knows where we are and what we need.

Given the way Wellstone has failed us, he probably has to update his road map every six years just to campaign for re-election in northwest Minnesota.
