I was offended by the letter John Totenhagen wrote to The Forum (Jan. 5). He must think the money for the roads he drove on in Fargo and the services he used while here (water and electricity) just appeared at City Hall. I can assure him that residents of Fargo pay handsomely for services and maintenance of roads. They also pay very high school taxes.

I own a very modest home in Fargo (1,000 square feet) on which the taxes for 2005 are over $2,700. Over half of that goes to the school district.

Although residents of towns outside Fargo do not pay taxes to support our public library, cards were issued to all persons without charge for many years. Anyone can come to the library and use the services (Internet, for example) for free from remote locations.

Former Gov. George Sinner's proposal is food for thought. Taxation is a dirty word at the moment, but governments decided many years ago to fund services for the people by the people. I look forward to discussion about Sinner's proposal and I hope there will be other proposals.
