Lee letter: Tariffs not good, but what's answer?

While it is difficult to argue the results of the tariffs mentioned in the Nov. 12 Forum editorial, it does seem that we dug ourselves a hole and we can't get out of it. The best thing to do when you're in a hole is to stop digging.

Just in case anyone hasn't noticed, American manufacturing jobs are rapidly disappearing. It was recently announced that Maytag is leaving. When the only jobs that are left are the low-paying service jobs, who will buy all the high-priced junk on the market? It won't be Americans because we will have trouble paying the rent.

The tariffs are having a negative effect, but what is the answer? How do we replace our industrial base? Ever tried to buy anything made in the USA lately? Just because it says "Ford" or "Chevrolet" on it doesn't mean we built it.

As for the president pandering to a few steel producing states in the east, what would we call it if it were a few wheat producing states in the upper Midwest?
