In response to the April 17th letter "What Happened to Kennedy's Democratic Party” by Janine Hanson, nothing infuriates me more than when people completely misrepresent one of our greatest presidents who is not here to refute their pack of lies.
The most liberal members of today's Democratic party are completely in line with where John F. Kennedy stood on a number of issues, and I can prove it. While president, Kennedy gave a speech where he argued in favor of a universal health care system, and he defended his position in much the same way Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt., does today. Watch the following YouTube video to see the speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14A1zxaHpD8. He touched on a number of other issues as well, leaving no doubt where he stood politically.
Another right-wing talking point is that JFK cut taxes. That's true, but it resulted in a top marginal income tax rate of around 70%, which is the same rate that the "socialist nutcase" Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, has proposed.
Here are a few quotes that further prove that JFK would be completely in line with today’s Democratic Party and at odds with the Republican Party:
- “The American labor movement has consistently demonstrated its devotion to the public interest. It is, and has been, good for all America.”
- “If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.”
- "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.”
I will let the readers decide whether they want to believe JFK in his own words, or the lies being told in his name by these right-wing history revisionists.
