Ah yes, spring is in the air and summer is around the corner. As a former teacher, this is the time that I would look into taking summer classes. Geography classes were my favorite. I got to take classes at North Dakota State University, University of North Dakota, Minot State University, and attend institutes in Bismarck and Fargo.
I learned a lot, but if I were still teaching I would have to change my approach. Self-defense, judo, and maybe a roper dope class on how to take a punch would top the list.
The incidence of violence against the staff in the Fargo public schools is alarming. If you have kids in school ask them if they have seen a teacher or para-professional assaulted. Ask them if they have heard a student swear at a teacher. You may be shocked at what you will hear.
It is beyond time to have an alternative school for middle and elementary students. The classroom disruptions alone should be enough to warrant an alternative school, but add assault into the mix and the learning environment for all of the students is gone. We are losing outstanding teachers that are retiring early. Young teachers may be hard to retain and getting great young people to join the teaching profession will become more difficult.
Teaching for me was the best job on the planet, but with today's issues, it would be difficult to stay in teaching. Often the least restrictive environment for students is not the regular classroom.
