Sometimes reading the local news makes my heart hurt. We have a state legislature and governor who believe that the state auditor needs their permission to do his job. This sounds a lot like the fox guarding the hen house to me.
In his column published May 12th, Rob Port tells us a referendum campaign is forming to put the question of vetoing this legislation on the ballot. Where and when can I sign?
Our legislature also seems to be doing their best to make the ethics commission, a voter-approved initiated measure, as toothless as possible. I fear that the ethics commission we do get will be an ethics commission in name only.
Finally, this same legislature is also trying to make getting an initiated measure on the ballot much more difficult. Fellow voters, these people work for us. Perhaps we should remind them of that in the next election, if not before.
