On April 24, The Forum published the article “Measles cases break record since disease was eliminated in the United States in 2000" on its website. Measles was once a disease we conquered as a society and hopefully by getting more people vaccinated, we can eliminate it again.

While considering this we should also expand our awareness to the rest of the world. Tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS kill millions of people globally. We are a global community and the United States has the opportunity to change the direction of these diseases globally.

Since 2002, the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria helped save 27 million lives. Without U.S. leadership in providing one-third of the financial resources for the Global Fund, many of those lives would have been lost. The Global Fund provides essential health care such as vaccines, access to health care and many other life impacting treatments to the world’s most impoverished places.

The Global Fund needs at least $14 billion to save 16 million lives by 2022 and put us on a path to finally ending these diseases. Let’s ask Congress and President Trump to fund at least one-third of the total needed for the Global Fund.
