Kudos to Sen. Heidi Heitkamp for reaching across the aisle to end the government shutdown and donating her salary to the Missouri Slope Areawide United Way. Her salary from the shutdown is going to a good cause to help combat homelessness in Bismarck.
It's only common sense that Congress shouldn't get paid for bringing the business of the people to a halt - something that Heidi seems to understand.
She should be applauded for doing the hard work of legislating and negotiating a compromise to end the government shutdown. The same can't be said of many in Congress these days.
We need more people like Heidi who work across the aisle and put partisanship aside to get things done for the people of North Dakota.
