Meteorologist John Wheeler tells us the "Dog Days of Summer" are upon us, which means Fargo will shut down the Island Park swimming pool on Aug. 12th. Every year it amazes me to see such a beautiful outdoor 50-meter swimming pool sit empty during the hottest part of August.

Dave Klundt, assistant director of recreation at the Fargo Park District, always claims he can't find lifeguards. This rings a little hollow as Moorhead keeps it's outdoor pool open another week longer and many area indoor pools are open year round (Hulbert Aquatic Center, YMCA, Minnesota State University Moorhead, North Dakota State University and Concordia to name a few).

Why can't we keep our outdoor swimming pool open another week or two and allow the lap swimmers and social swimmers more time to enjoy the sunshine and water in such a fantastic facility before letting it sit empty for another 42 weeks.

Battles lives in Fargo.
