When I see headlines like the one in Monday’s Forum, “Taxes will increase for West Fargo city government and schools,” it always makes me cringe. I recently heard the same thing out of Mayor Mahoney’s mouth over in Fargo about raising taxes.
Perhaps someone with a little more knowledge on the subject could explain this to me more in depth. I understand what “their reasons” are, but in my own mind it just doesn’t add up. When I think “growing city (cities)” I naturally assume this means more homes/apartments being built, thus more property taxes being paid.
I also assume a large spike in sales tax being collected as well (more people spending on everyday items = more sales tax). So naturally one would assume that a growing population would have growing tax revenue to coincide, and the problem would simply fix itself.
