Senator Kevin Cramer’s praise for President Trump’s overtures to Ukraine and then China to meddle in American politics is hardly surprising, but nonetheless shocking.

The Republican senator’s statement of appreciation that the president was “transparent” in committing what may well be both impeachable conduct and criminality, as well and further extolling him because he “didn’t try to do it covertly” is like expressing admiration for a bank robber who pulls off a heist in broad daylight rather than sneaking in the facility at night or, in more contemporary terms, pulls off a less “transparent” electronic hacking theft.

It’s one thing to say that the “means justify the ends,” but it’s another to believe that wrongful behavior is less outrageous if done brazenly.
