During the COVID-19 lockdown, a cadre of front-line workers stepped up so that the rest of us could stay home. For their commitment we owe health care professionals, delivery people, grocery store workers, warehouse workers, truck drivers, and many others a deep debt of gratitude.
Now we face another emergency. As systemic racism toward the BIPoC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) communities in the United States has again emerged front and center in our national consciousness, we need a new cadre of workers to step up. On the front lines we now need real estate agents, insurance brokers, bankers, loan officers, human resources staff, property developers, business owners, union officials, managers, landlords, people who recruit and hire – in fact, we need all those who have some gatekeeper role in determining who gets resources and who advances, and who does not – to lead the change our society needs.
Everyone else also has a role to play, in whatever capacity they can, so that all Americans, with the emphasis on all, can realize the American Dream that has been our country’s guiding vision for so long.
