Want to see a person's true character? Watch how they react under stress. The fear this so-called pandemic has caused is an eye opener on just how pitiful some in our society have become. God forbid we ever need to overcome another Great Depression or the recurrence of evil from a Nazi-like regime. There are still those out there that could rise to those levels of historical threats but regrettably they appear to be a dwindling group.

Certain health official messages stoked by the media have convinced many perfectly healthy Americans they need to hide behind a mask and live in fear of their fellow man. Refuse to conform to this mantra and you will be publicly shamed. There is not a media account now that doesn’t include the obligatory report if people are not wearing masks and distancing from others. It is almost like they are playing a game. Let’s see how many people we can scare into doing what we tell them to do.

Not to belittle the fact that people have died and families are hurting. To point out the obvious, everyday those in the prime of life die from cancer, heart disease, car or a myriad of other accidents. Distressing losses for each family, but casualties as a society we hardly notice. We are all mortal and the list of things killing us is a mile long.

In March, another item was added to the list and this country lost its collective mind. For those under 70 in relatively good health the survival rate is well over 95%. This is an undisputed fact.

Everyday we get our helping of panic porn from the media meant to scare us into conformity. It is working well as indicated by the numerous letters to the editor submitted by a fearful community. These folks plead with the government to use its power to allay their fear by forcing non-conformist to submit.

No doubt this is a highly contagious disease, but our president who has several risk factors as well as millions of others have caught it and barely been slowed down. Those of you living in fear, it is not the government’s job to protect you. It is your job to protect yourself. Free societies do not allow the government to dictate acceptable risk levels.

Government’s job is to educate the citizenry on the hazard and allow us the freedom to make our own calculations. The US Constitution, while imperfect, is the best founding document ever created in human history. We have allowed its significance and individual rights it grants to be slowly eroded over the past 200 years, probably never so quickly as in the past 20.

The fear after 9/11 accelerated the destruction and now a generation later a pandemic with an inflated number of 200,000 casualties has convinced far too many to voluntarily give up more of its guarantees and protections, out of fleeting desire for self-preservation. What a shame. Every night we get the running casualty count on what COVID has claimed. For a little context, it would be refreshing to hear a report on what the casualty rate to keep the American dream flourishing for the past two hundred forty-four years has demanded.
