The Forum printed a column by Cal Thomas, “Ministry of Truth 2.0,” on Monday, May 31, where Thomas compares today’s truth with the "truth" in George Orwell’s novel, “1984.”
Thomas noted that there were many similarities with what Orwell wrote about and what we hear and read today. Truth was defined by the Ministry of Truth and “sometimes resulted in ‘doublespeak’ or contradictions.” It had nothing to do with truth. Its intent was to enhance and strengthen the all-powerful state. It’s called propaganda and it leads to tyranny.
The point of Thomas's commentary was: Are we comfortable with government telling us, especially children, what to believe and who to trust? The government and the media have told us that claims the election was stolen is a “big lie.” I don’t see why investigating election integrity is so fearful. I wouldn’t be the first person to be skeptical of government and its record on “doublespeak.”
I can think of a few more “big lies.”
Throughout the 2020 campaign, President Joe Biden promised to fight man-made climate change by “following the science.” What he really means is follow my plan which includes transitioning off meat, giving up flying and eliminating fossil fuels. Economist Ludwig von Mises observed that science cannot actually tell us what we should do. Science helps us find out what is. What we should do is a value judgment, which is not science. We don’t have enough scientific evidence of what causes climate to change. Biden’s plan to fight climate change will very likely destroy our economic system. His plan is anything but scientific and therefore a big lie.
The science of embryology proves that the genetic composition of human beings is established at the time of fertilization. Molecular biology verifies that this genetic material, also known as DNA, is the “the very basis of life itself.” The scientific consensus is that human life begins at conception. Abortion conveniently ignores this scientific fact and those who support it are complicit in a huge “big lie.” The Democratic Party uses science only when it fits their agenda.

Here are few more “big lies”: America was founded in 1619 based on slavery and that we continue to be a systemically racist country, men can be women and women can be men, hydroxychloroquine is not effective in the treatment of COVID-19 and critical race theory is needed in our schools to abolish racism. But the grand-daddy of all lies: Big Tech’s massive social media platforms do not take political sides.
There are plenty of other big lies; these are only a few of them. Most are ideological and have caused great division in our society. Most lies I believe are being fueled by leftists in the media, academia and social media.
Government must act to combat Big Tech’s censorship which obstructs the accumulation of knowledge and the discussion of ideas. The media needs to be objective and fair in their news reporting. The censorship and propaganda must be eliminated if America is to remain free. There is only one way to discern what truth is and what a lie is. It comes from someone who walked among us and he said many times, “I tell you the truth.” And the best part is, he wrote it all down so we don't forget.
