I would like to thank the men and woman of our police department for their courage and the professional job they did on the downtown streets on Saturday night.
I read these letters condemning the police for using tear gas and anything else they can find as an excuse to put them down. Try putting yourself in their shoes for 20 minutes with people jeering, throwing frozen water bottles, breaking storefront windows and stealing anything inside they can take with them, and beating the windows out of police cars. The first thing you would do is run in the other direction and call 911.
Anyone can break windows and destroy things just because they can. It takes a real hero to stand up to an uncertain and sometimes volatile crowd of people. There could have been a much worse outcome.
Because of the professional way in which they performed their job, the damage was minimal. Thank you so much.
