Letter: Diversity is an important check against tyranny

A person holds a letter with the text "letter to the editor" overlaid on the image.

The sky is falling! Christmas is under siege! A clerk was told not to say “Merry Christmas,” this must be the end of western civilization. (The anecdotal evidence of a clerk being instructed not to say “Merry Christmas” has a lot more to do with the business owner’s concerns with his/her bottom line than offending anybody.)

In Federalist paper No. 10, James Madison explained how important diversity is to the United States. He said that by having a great number of factions and diversity we could avoid tyranny. Groups would be forced to negotiate and compromise among themselves, arriving at solutions that would respect the rights of minorities. In other words, diversity makes America strong and is an important check against tyranny.

Whether or not a clerk says Merry Christmas is insignificant compared to actual issues that face our nation. Over $1.5 trillion dollars of student debt, the rising cost of health care, the growing disparity of incomes, climate issues and immigration reform are all issues that need our attention. So, Merry Christmas and have a great and safe new year.

Fun fact: In 1929, North Dakota had the first mosque that was built in the United States. The Ross Masjid mosque was founded by Syrian Muslims in North Dakota. Here’s a New Year’s resolution for you. Stop vilifying new Americans and Americans that are culturally different than you. Be glad that they are supplying our region with a much needed wide range of workers that spend their money locally.

America is a great place, it always has been, and with the help of immigrants it will remain great!
