Letter: FirstLink is your local 24-hour support

A person holds a letter with the text "letter to the editor" overlaid on the image.

I am writing to address the story by Clare Proctor, “Abused kids are texting hotline for help, support,” published in The Forum Sept. 7, 2019.

Across the nation, all generations are realizing that texting is an easy way to communicate to others. Just like our learning style, we all learn and communicate however it works best for us.

At FirstLink, we have the 24-hour 211 helpline, that provides resource and referrals, crisis and suicide support services that can be easily reached by:

  • Dialing the three digits 2-1-1 or 701-235-7335
  • Texting your zip code to 898-211
  • Youth are encouraged to text ND4me to 898-211

Many parts of the nation are not blessed to have a crisis/helpline/texting service like FirstLink, which also is the only call center in the state to answer the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. (1-800-273-8255)
So, although other text lines can be helpful, I want to assure you that local people helping you 24 hours a day is available through FirstLink. We have been here for you for almost 50 years and have a current database of resources.

You can call or text us day or night.
