Since the pandemic began last March, politicians and health officials have repeatedly told us the shutdown of businesses and schools, regardless of economic and social impacts, were necessary to “save lives.” How many times did we hear them proclaim, “If shutting down businesses or an entire economy saves even one life, it’s worth it”?

Now, as our collection of local leaders gather in Bismarck for their bi-annual retreat, one of them, West Fargo Rep. Ben Koppelman, has introduced a bill to increase the speed limit on our highways. I suppose Koppelman will tell us driving faster will “save lives.” You cannot make it up!
