Letter: I've had it with this 'he was the lesser of two evils' excuse

A person holds a letter with the text "letter to the editor" overlaid on the image.

Speaking about Democrats, Trump said, “They are vicious, horrible people. They are horrible people.” “Elements of the party openly support Iran, an enemy of the United States.”

If you were upset about Hillary Clinton and the “basket of deplorables” you should be more upset by Trump’s comments. These are worse than Clinton’s comments because the US president is calling an entire political party treasonous. Saying that I am a never Trumper, libtard, hater, or suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome does not make Trump’s comments acceptable.

A current or former U.S. president should never call a large percentage of citizens horrible because they don’t agree with his policies, actions and rhetoric. Hillary Clinton set GOP hair on fire with her “basket of deplorables,” yet crickets when Trump calls people “vicious, horrible” and infers they are traitors. Both were only three words. Clinton used only one adjective, deplorable, which is defined as “deserving censure.” Trump used two adjectives—vicious, horrible—and also infers treasonous actions. Vicious is defined as “dangerously aggressive” and horrible as “extremely bad.”

Clinton’s choice of words was poor, but it speaks to the actions and words of people. Trump’s words attack the very character of people. There is a difference between condemning a behavior and condemning who someone is at their core.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard a Trumpinista say, “ he was the lesser of two evils ,” I would be very rich, perhaps as rich as Trump wants us to think he is. I could even afford my very own gold toilet.

Saying you voted for him because he was the lesser of two evils won’t cut it in the next election. He is not the only individual the GOP is allowed to nominate. Since the GOP isn’t going to nominate anyone else, they are nominating an individual they know is evil.

If you voted for him as the lesser of two evils, you owe it to the rest of us to back a nominee who is not evil. The lesser of two evils is still evil.
In 2020, the GOP fully owns the evil. If you have said Trump is evil and have not been working with your party to nominate a candidate who is not evil, that is deplorable. If you have no issue with the U.S. President saying some of your family, friends and neighbors are dangerously aggressive and extremely bad, that is deplorable. If you remain silent as your party again nominates an individual for the presidential election you have admitted is evil, that is deplorable. You now own and embrace the evil and that is deplorable. You got your conservative judges and only had to sell your soul to the one you call evil, that is deplorable.

Please note that I am calling the actions and words of people deplorable and am not calling people deplorable.
